An exciting opportunity is available for a self-motivated, inquisitive, and innovative researcher to join our team at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University’s Center for Additive Manufacturing, CIMP-3D, Center for Innovative Material Processing through Direct Digital Deposition. In this role, you will be part of more than a dozen world-class engineers, scientists, and support staff that are engaged in the discovery, development, and deployment of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology.

You will:

  • Manage and provide technical leadership of AM projects involving fundamental and applied research and development of metals, ceramics, and composites for our Navy, DoD, and industrial sponsors

  • Coordinate scientific and engineering efforts across universities, laboratories, companies, and other entities

  • Specify, define, and/or develop AM systems and processes; define test protocols, perform or coordinate materials characterization, and conduct failure analysis

Typical requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline; Master’s Degree preferred; 14+ years related experience.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • A minimum of five years of direct-related AM experience

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and/or collaborate with other scientists and engineers through difficult problems, using proper steps to define and formulate ideas to reach a solution

  • Success in a technical environment, where various forms of communication and organizational skills were crucial to be effective

  • Effective at presenting in front of large groups of professionals, conveying information to drive to action or decision

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • Active government security clearance

  • Military or DoD research experience

Your working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA. Domestic and international travel will occasionally be required to support testing, reporting, and technology implementation.
