JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


We are searching for Research & Development Engineers to join our Electronic Systems Department (ESD) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University (PSU). ARL-PSU’s purpose is to develop innovative engineering and technology solutions to challenging national problems in support of the Navy, DoD, and Intel communities. These positions will be an integral part of multi-disciplinary engineering teams that will collaborate in the development of custom hardware, firmware, and autonomous software running on small embedded processor systems, complex network distributed processing systems, and power systems. You will support or lead in the execution of programmatic activities to accomplish sponsor objectives and the department technical mission.


The mission of ESD is to develop and maintain expertise in the research, development, assembly, integration, and delivery of specialty electronic systems for undersea applications.


You will:




  • Develop system architectures and perform functional allocations




  • Design and analyze electrical circuits




  • Develop Software/Firmware for embedded hardware functions




  • Develop Technical Data Packages (TDPs) for designs




  • Write and present design specifications, status, and test reports




  • Contribute design effort estimations to proposals, reports and presentations




  • Collaborate with team members and nurture relationships with customers and vendors




Required skills/experience areas include:




  • Design, integration, and test of custom digital, analog, and power electronics




  • Embedded HW/SW experience (Microcontrollers, FPGAs, Real-time, Linux and Windows OS)




  • Strong oral and written communication skills.




Preferred skills/experience areas include:




  • Xilinx ISE/Vivado development environments




  • Xilinx System on Chip (SoC) devices




  • C/C++, Matlab, LabView, Verilog, VHDL




  • Digital design, analog design, networks, serial interfaces, power supplies




  • Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout and routing (controlled impedance, tuning, and high speed)




  • Active security clearance




This position will be filled as a level 2, 3, or 4 depending upon successful candidate's education and experience. Minimally requires a Bachelors’ degree in an Engineering or Science based discipline plus 2 years’ related experience for a level 2. Additional education and/or experience required for higher level positions. A Masters’ degree or PHD in Electrical or Aerospace Engineering is preferred.


Responsibilities of a Level 3 include:




  • Assist in concept development and participate in the design of engineering systems; evaluate, select, and apply engineering process and techniques to assignments




  • Manage Electrical/Electronic Engineering projects of small or moderate size




  • Mentor and train employees in the development of technical, project, and business development skills




  • Contribute to proposals, reports and presentations




Responsibilities of a Level 4 include:




  • Manage multiple or large projects; plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate detailed phases of the work of a major program.




  • Identify program follow-on work and persuade sponsors to fund; impact customer decisions and strategies




  • May chair sessions at technical meetings; give papers and/or presentations; participate in external seminars, workshops, professional societies and committees




  • Make substantial contributions to determining feasibility of goals/objectives; evaluate proposed or ongoing projects
