How Ned's Declassified Prepared You for School

By Alexis Sanchez on April 1, 2016

Okay, so I was needing a break and decided to watch some Lifetime movies to entertain me (yeah, so the break was a little long). One of the movies was titled Bad Sister and I immediately noticed that the main character’s obsession was with Devon Werkheiser’s character, Jason. You probably know Devon Werkheiser from the role he’s better known for as Ned Bigby in Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide.

Seeing Devon again on my television made me think back to how Ned’s Declassified prepared you for school with all the different advice and hints Ned gave throughout the children’s television show that I didn’t give much thought to as a middle schooler. Now as a college student, I can look at the advice and see how even some of the simplest of tips were actually very helpful.

Considering Ned gave out over 50 tips from his survival guide, it wasn’t hard to find ones that perfectly guided the way through school. Here are only some of the tips from Ned’s school survival guide that you will see prepared you for school (middle school and beyond).

1. “Have fun, get to know your teachers better.”

I know what you’re thinking. This statement is very contradictory and enforced way too much, but it’s so true. While you’re in school, you have to try and find some way to have fun or else you will easily get caught up in the stress. Also, getting to know your teachers and professors is something that is always encouraged but isn’t really taken seriously until you realize you aren’t doing so well or you need some recommendations. Trust me, talking with your teachers will make your life so much easier because you will feel more comfortable to ask for help and therefore, do better in the class.

2. “If you are sick don’t wait, go to the nurses office immediately.”

It’s easy to get caught up in trying to make sure you don’t miss class or any assignments but you’re health is important too. Don’t forget to think of you sometimes!

3. “If it is timed, do not say “ummmmm……”"

Class speeches definitely get worse after every “ummm…..” you include, so practice in front of a mirror or in front of friends to avoid the offending sound.

4. “Don’t like something? Don’t complain, change it.”

This tip was referencing towards talent shows, but can also be applied to school and life in general. If you don’t like how you’re doing in a class, don’t complain about the class just try to do everything you can to make it better.

5. “Chill out, don’t panic.”

This is probably that hardest tip to remember and follow during the school year because how can you not panic just thinking about all the things you have to do and have yet to do. That makes this tip the most important one to remember, because taking the time to relax and calm down for a bit can make a huge difference on how you are feeling and how you perceive your life. Always take the time to take a chill pill!
