Food, Beer, and Butts: Reasons to Study in Europe

By Katy Shetler on December 1, 2015

Have you ever eaten a slice of Kraft singles cheese and thought, “man, this is the stuff?”

Have you ever shotgunned a can of Bud Light and exclaimed, “Wow, it sure doesn’t get better than this?”

Well drop your commodities and think again, fellow pupils! Sit back, relax, and browse through the top 6 reasons you should expand your horizons by studying abroad.

6. HISTORY

No matter where you study, the location you chose will be sprinkled with a vast array of history and back stories. You might find yourself walking in the neighborhood where the Black Plague started in 14th century England. Or you might be walking around Dublin and stumble upon an 18th century cathedral that has been transformed to a bar and night club. Amen to that!

***Added bonus: If you buy drinks, the credit card statement reveals that you spent money at church.

5. ART

You’ll get to see amazing original sculptures and paintings in world famous art museums. And you bet your bottom dollar you know what that entails …

4. PIZZA

If you have a heart and enjoy oxygen, then you must have the basic human capacity of loving pizza. It’s that one delightful slab of food that always keeps us coming back for more. American pizza is pretty damn good if I do say so myself.

But just you wait until your taste buds get to surf on that European tidal wave of pizza. I can’t even begin to describe how good it is … just thinking about it makes me want to cry long into the night.

3. BEER

Set aside that Bud Light immediately and get your hands on a regionally brewed European beer. Whether it’s a Guiness, Amestel, Erdinger, Kronenbourg, or what have you, you’ll surely agree with Lizzy McGuire’s sentiment: “This is what dreams are made of!”

2. CHEESE

When you sample a taste of European cheese, you’ll want to block your experiences with Kraft singles out of your memory. And then you’ll want to make up for lost time by scarfing down endless blocks of delicious cheese.

And if you’re looking for an added bonus, you can have the perfect excuse to crack open a bottle of wine at any given time. You can’t eat cheese without wine; what are you, an earth worm?

1. CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

I can’t tell you how many cool cultural experiences you will be a part of. These kinds of happenstances seem to be the most memorable of them all. Just imagine walking through Dijon, France ( the land where Dijon mustard was created) when suddenly a random man proposes to you with a little jar of gourmet mustard.

That’s what I call a dream come true. I need to call Lifetime immediately and sell them the rights to that little rom com.

So if you do get the chance to go abroad, sign up immediately. You, your taste buds, and your BAC will not regret it. Cheers!
